FIFA WORLD CUP 2026 : England 0-0 Ghana
There was a popular school of thought among Ghanaian supporters at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough yesterday: had this crop of Black Stars players been alive during the colonial era, the British might have faced fierce resistance in their attempts to colonize the Gold Coast.
For 90 relentless minutes, the Black Stars mounted a defensive masterclass, frustrating England at every turn and denying the Three Lions even the slightest glimpse of goal. Much like the determination and resilience that characterized Ghana’s struggle for independence under leaders such as Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, the Black Stars displayed courage, discipline, and an unyielding spirit in securing a hard-fought 0-0 draw.
At the heart of Ghana’s resistance were defenders Jerome Opoku and Jonas Adjetey, who stood like immovable pillars at the back, repelling wave after wave of English attacks. Midfield generals Thomas Partey, Caleb Yirenkyi, and Kwasi Sibo worked tirelessly to neutralize England’s creative threats, while captain Jordan Ayew led from the front with his relentless pressing and leadership.
Goalkeeper Benjamin Asare was calm and assured whenever called upon, while Antoine Semenyo and substitute Prince Adu provided moments of danger that kept England’s defense on high alert. Adu, in particular, came close to changing the game’s narrative and was involved in a controversial penalty appeal that left many Ghanaians feeling aggrieved.
England dominated possession, but Ghana’s organization, resilience, and tactical discipline ensured that Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham, and company were largely kept at bay. By the final whistle, the Black Stars had not only earned a valuable point but had also reminded the football world of Ghana’s enduring fighting spirit—a spirit that has defined the nation from its historic independence in 1957 to its proud performances on football’s biggest stage.
